The spicy shoyu reminds us of the Chinese style cooking in Hong Kong where fresh shrimps are steamed to perfection and served plain with the spicy shoyu dipping sauce. Three Stars. Check out the short video. When we were in Maui a few years back, we came across a wonderful Japanese sushi restaurant named Sensei. There is a Sensei at Waikiki also nestled within the Marriott Resort, located close to the southern end of the Waikiki Beach. The hotel is quite busy, but the facility is quite dated in need of a major renovation. The Sensei layout is comparable to its Maui sisters. We have high expectation, unfortunately that quickly vanishes. Overall, we find the food presentation to be on par with the other sister restaurants, but the sauce, the secret ingredient that made our dining experience an outstanding one last time, is sorely missing here.

The red snapper Carpaccio is excellent; the sauce resembles the common Chinese ginger and scallion soy sauce. Excellent, but not unique or outstanding. The ahi poki is average at best, too much hot pepper oil and a bit too much shoyu. The fish flavor is not coming through. The sauce overwhelms the dish and hides the delicate fish flavor.
